Crossing Guards, Photo-Ops and Donuts

fallen

I will start to explain the title of this post with a picture.

No. This was not staged. Yes...I compeltely and totally fell backwards in my chair. Go ahead. You can laugh. ::patiently waiting for laughter to cease:: Ahem ::clearing throat:: finished? Now..in my defense: A. at least I looked fly as I proceeded violently and abruptly downwards. ( fly: lets see if you can figure this one out of your own. You can do this. You are cool) B. Notice it is a kid size chair..not adult friendly. That makes it a little less funny? Right? ::trying to keep a straight face...failing miserably....busting out laughing:: Get compose. Deep breath.

Now let me give your further explanation to the title of this post. I began my day begging and pleading with our crossing guards to be the type of crossing guard you see on TV. You know..the ones with the whistles and all the fancy dance moves? Doesn't it seem like they would just move traffic a little faster. I need traffic to move fast. I am on a strict Starbucks time schedule. A time schedule which...wasn't so much adhered to this morning. (Yes...adhered. I used it. Magna Cum people. Magna Cum) Exactly 2 minutes until the bell..I am sitting in front of school...watching the clock on my dashboard praying the minutes will not change. I am so close to school I can practically see the untied shoelaces on the kindergarten kids. At this exact second a light shines down from the Heavens..all cars stop in the tracks...and the crossing guard lets me turn. ::sigh of relief:: It's going to be a fabulous day after all. How can it not be? I'm wearing a page-boy hat after all. Page-boy hats days have to be good days...right?

Wrong. About a wrong as wearing socks with sandals. This brings us to our photo-op for the day. Let me help you get an HD picture of this action packed movie. As I was falling, it was center time. Center time in pre-k land equals lets talk to the teacher time. I was surrounded by little people wanting to tell me all about their pets..their new hairbow...or a random story about a rocket ship. Take your pick. Which...come to think of it...I guess the rocket ship story was somewhat appropriate for me flying towards the earth. Off track...where was I? Center time. Surrounded by little people. So..as I'm falling. Backwards. With no means to catch myself. I am also trying not to injure any four-year olds, which then causes me to knock over all of my neatly stacked...color grouped papers. They are now flying all across the floor like ticker tape at a parade. In the midst of this ticker tape parade I have 4 year olds who are whole heartedly concerned about my safety. They are surrounding me as if I am some poor creature who cannot possibly make it without their help. They are coming to my rescue. I hear the Chariots of Fire theme song playing in the background. They take their role seriously. Making sure I am okay. Making sure I did not break a hip..or at the very least mess up my hair. Photo op over.

Onto donuts. Today our school handed out spirit shirts. (spirit shirt: teacher vocab for a shirt the whole school wears..Called spirit shirts becuase...come on...make the connection...you can do it. Everyone wears a fun shirt...school spirit...) At our school you get to wear your shirt tomorrow if you bring a canned good for needy families. Teachable moment. I take it. We talk about helping others. Being kind. Being generous. As we are having this heart to heart one of my little ones raises his hand:

"Teacher, if they don't have money for food. Then they have to just buy donuts." Of course they do. That's the only reasonable conclusion to come to. Welcome to my Wednesday.

Here are my shares for the day: the first is a picture of my classroom...before the destruction of what we will forever refer to as The Incident. I will preface this picture with I am spoiled. I know. I own it. I heart my principal. I have 2 classrooms. One I use for teaching and quiet centers. The other for noisy centers. Here is my quiet room. My home away from home.
