Make it Work
I will begin today by sharing with you a special moment in every Teacher's life. The moment when she sees a former student and the student says something so profound....so ingenius that the teacher stands in awe. Pride seeping out of her pores. Glowing. That was me today. Here's the play by play.Me: Walking into school this morning. Starbucks in hand. Rushing to make it looked like I had not arrived at school exactly 1.5 minutes before the bell rang. My former genius of a student: "Good morning, I like that coach bag." Me: ::stopping dead in my leopard print stilettos, fighting back tears of pride:: Thanks sweets. She is in fourth grade. I did not know the glory of a fabulous Coach purse until I was 20.
Let's continue with this theme of fashion for this post. It is Thursday. Project Runway must be watched. If you do not know of this Project Runway..or PR as though of us in the know call it...I am going to need you to google it. Our friendship hangs in the balance until you do. This knowledge is important. I am going to help you now. This is Tim Gunn. He is the Dr. Jean of fashion ( Dr. Jean: The 4 year old whisperer. For those of you who do not know teacher language. You are welcome) Now where were we? Tim Gunn. Shhhh..listen. Do you hear the angels singing? Tim Gunn has 4 faces when judging clothes. They never change. They are as reliable as Chopsticks is at wearing chopsticks.
Sidenote: Tim would not approve of chopsticks. Fedoras. Absolutely.
This is Tim. This is the glory of his faces.
Tim' s faces got me to thinking about teacher's faces. We all have the same faces in our bag of tricks. We can stop a 4 year old from bunny hopping down the hall with just one look. With one encouraging look we can help a child believe that... Yes, why yes he can remember his teachers name. Let's examine.
The "I'm super proud of you...I knew you could do it" look
The "I know I didn't just see that...you really need to stop it. Now." look
The "This is not a fabulous moment for you. You are now in trouble." look
The "uh oh...you're teacher totally forgot something...yes she is silly...it's a good thing Mrs. Ann is here" look
The "hmmm....you have asked me a question I totally do not know the answer to" look
If you are new to the teaching profession, I have helped you. Get your mirror. Practice. You may thank me later. I must go now. Project Runway starting.
Oh..in my PR haste ( if you still do not know what this means I cannot help you. I am sorry) I forgot to share. Tomorrow. Tomorrow I will add my share. This is a promise. On my Coach bag.
